Obituary of Philip Joseph Coughlan

It is with great sadness the family of Philip Joseph “Joe” Coughlan wish to announce his passing on Wednesday June 5, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Saint John, N.B. in 1948, Joe was a son of the late Harold Leo and Mary Anne (Mitchell) Coughlan, and beloved husband of Joan Helen (McNamee) Coughlan.

Joe was a graduate of St. Lawrence College and furthered his studies at St. Thomas University. He began his career as a probation officer with the Province of New Brunswick where he worked for 25 years. The last 5 years of his career, he was a member of the National Parole Board of Canada, retiring in 2003.

Joe served 2 terms on city council. He was involved in the John Howard Society of Canada. Joe was a member of the Board of Governors of St. Thomas University, board member of the Saint John Regional Hospital and Rocmaura Nursing Home. He was also involved in the Assumption Parish as a member of the gentlemen altar servers.

Joe was a devoted family man and a great friend to many. He was a man of a thousand questions and full of great advice. Joe was a real one of a kind, always a story or joke to share. His sense of humour never disappointed. Joe always loved to entertain. He looked forward to Thursday night poker nights, long evenings around the campfire, and many family gatherings.

Joe is survived by his wife; Joan H, three daughters, Melissa A (Matthew Madore) Coughlan, of Rothesay, Heather M. (Grant Lyons) Coughlan, of Grand Bay - Westfield and Meghan K. (Spencer) Coughlan – Brown, of Saint John, 5 grandsons; William, Brydon, Oliver, Chase, and Cruz, sisters; Elaine (Larry) Batt, of Fredericton, N.B., Veronica (Joe) Murphy, of Saint John, N.B., and sister in-law Sue Coughlan of Saint John, N.B., many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
