Obituary of Mary Ann Stevens
Saying goodbye is hard and with heavy but thankful hearts our family says goodbye to our Mom, Mary Ann Stevens. Mom was born in Saint John to her loving parents, Gladys and Fred Fuller on June 6, 1935.
Her personality and nature suited her perfectly as a mother to five crazy kids and a nurse. Mom had mothering and nursing built into her DNA and was always at her best when someone she loved or cared for was at their worst.
Early in her career Mom nursed at St Joseph’s in Paediatrics and Evening Supervising. Later she spent many years on the evening shift in the Emergency Department or “the Outdoor” as Mom would call it. We used to tell her she could write a book with all the stories she would tell us about the crazy goings on at a small hospital Emerge during so many of her 3:30 to 11:30 shifts.
Mom’s sharp mind never stood still and when she was in her late 40’s she began another nursing career as an industrial RN. At 50 she received her Industrial Nursing designation and finished her career as the Industrial Nurse for Rothesay Paper. Her desire to learn never ended and there was little anyone could catch her up on, especially if it concerned medicine or politics.
Mom and Dad grew up surrounded by lakes and a love of the water and family. As kids we spent every summer camping, often surrounded by other family members. In the early days it was in tents and then eventually in cabins on the Washademoak and until today, Hunter Lake. Looking back, we all have many wonderful memories of those great family times.
When we think of Mom we smile with many happy thoughts. Here are just a few:
- She was small but mighty and we were pretty sure she ruled the world when we were kids
- She could never carry a tune but tried her best until, as small children, we asked her to “talk the words Mommy”
- She made the best chocolate chip cookies and her “Glady Roles” were requested by all of us for our special meal
- She loved to shop and never missed the chance to hit up Woolco Dollar Days and Sears Days
- She loved babies and her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her endless joy
- She loved her Diest Pepsi and to the end it was delivered by one of her two “favourite” Sonsin-Law every week
- She loved a good book, and the local library let her take out as many as she wanted every time she visited
- She loved her family most and gave tirelessly to all of us
And most of all, although our hearts are heavy that she has left us, we know she has reunited with her husband of over 50 years, Donnie Stevens and her sister and best friend, Susan Fuller and that gives us all amazing joy and comfort.
Mom is predeceased by her parents, Gladys Fuller (nee Logue) and Frederick Fuller; sister, Susan Fuller; brother, Paul Fuller; sisters-in-law, Maureen Fuller, and Rosalie Fuller and her husband of 54 years, Donald Lee Stevens.
She will be lovingly remembered by many including her brother, Fred Fuller and sister, Bobbie Barrett (Murray). Her children, Sue-Ellen Marcolin (Ron), Daniel Stevens (Laura), Tony Stevens (Dawn), Andrew Stevens (Kim) and Jill Doucet (Robin). Her grandchildren, Amanda, Travis, Laura, Kelly, Kevin, Caitlin, Karlie, Vanessa, Sheri, Michael, Nicole, Devon, Makalah and Sophia. Her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Emmett, Violet, Sophia, Elliot, William, Elijah, Avery and Oaklyn. Her goddaughters, Debbie and Pam.
Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the amazing staff at the Loch Lomond Village. You treated Mom like family, and we will be forever grateful. Special thanks to Mark, Lisa, Kelly, Julius, Trent, Sarah, Sam and Joanne.
