Sometimes it’s so hard to find the right thing to say. You’re a lucky man, Mark, to have had such a beautiful force for a father. He leaves incredible legacy behind in all who knew and loved him - I hope that keeps you so very proud. With deep sympathy, Erin

Although I've known Charlie for about twenty or twenty-five years through windsurfing, I felt like I really got to know Charlie at his Memorial Service on Sunday. Mark painted a beautiful portrait of his Dad, with Anne, Phoebe and many of Charlie's friends' stories 'framing the masterpiece' that was Charlie. It was a beautiful moment and I felt honoured to be there. Thank you.

What can I say about Charlie that could possibly convey my feelings for him? This is a very tough question. I met Charlie at Pro Am Sports in its first location on Rothesay Avenue close to the McDonalds. It was a very small shop, it was 1977. I went there at lunchtime from my school to buy some ski gloves and was met by an older “gentleman” , John (Charlie’s father), who wasn’t at all interested in assisting some young boy off the street and was quite happy to let me know that. I asked him why he was even there and he said that he was servicing skis and that he had no desire to deal with anything else. I asked him if he thought it would be a good idea to hire someone who might be willing to help customers. He said “yes but it ain’t up to me”. He said that his son would be in that evening and if I wanted to talk to him about it then I should do so. I arrived that evening and met with an eager crowd of shoppers all wanting attention from Charlie and Anne and I stole a few seconds of his time and repeated what had happened earlier. Charlie asked if I had any experience working in a ski shop and I said no but I loved skiing and I was good with people and willing to learn. He said then you can have the job to which I replied “when do you want me to start?”. He looked at me and said go hang your coat in the back. This is what began a lifelong friendship with the man that I considered to be more like a brother and at times a father. His ways of life, enjoying everything and everybody are ingrained in me and I have him to thank for that. I stopped by to see him on Friday afternoon only to find that he was napping, probably after his daily bike ride. I was twenty feet away and I could feel his energy. I’m going to miss you Charlie as all who knew you surely will. You’re in my heart and my soul forever. ❤️❤️❤️

Sending much love, condolences, and hugs to the family.
I first met Charles at Pro am Sports, located in the Oak Hall on king street uptown Saint John and at the Rothesay Ave location. I was just a young boy maybe 10-12 years old. I would stop in the store and dream about one day owning one of those Diamond Back Viper bmx bikes I would see in the magazines. Well Charles and his team helped make that childhood dream come true by allowing me to stop by every week and make a payment from my telegraph journal news paper route money. It took some time, but both parties had lots of patience. Once paid for, I rolled that bike out the front doors and the dream grew from there. For that, I will be forever grateful for Charles kindness. I also have fond memories of the back yard half pipe or quarter pipe at Marks in east riverside.

I had the privilege to know Charlie as a friend, fellow instructor and roommate in Banff. Charlie and I shared digs when we both taught at Ski Big 3 back in 2003 + years. He was always fun to be around and always had that ‘one line catch phrase’ that made us all smile. As the gang of 4 we had some great times which always included many laughs.
He always talked about how proud he was of Mark’s achievements and Anne’s dedication to his well being. I will always smile when I think of Charlie, a true friend who genuinely cared for his friends and family and showed it in kind.
My deepest sympathies to you Mark, Anne and Family

Dear Anne, Mark and family
I was so sad to hear your news. As you know I was lucky enough to spend many ski holidays and seasons in Banff with Charlie around for most of them. I have so many fond memories as do many of his friends from those days. He was such a great character, I’ll never forget him shouting “Liz!” In his own inimitable way. We had great times and the world has lost one of its great guys! Sending love and condolences. Liz x

To Mark and Ann and Family,
Charlie and I and our gang of 4, were glued together for 10 years here in Banff. We were best of friends sharing laughs and meals and beers. The time spent on the ski hills was always interesting making sure Charlie stayed healthy but also being entertained by his antics. If there was a rock on the ski hill, he would find it. If there was a chance of going the wrong way, he probably would. We always had to keep an eye on him, but we loved him. Charlie returned that love to me when our dear friend Steve passed away. He embraced me and consoled me as I fell apart. I couldn't have managed without him. Thankyou Charlie. I know you and Steve will cycle and ski the powder together "up there" for eternity. While you do that, we will be missing you down here. Your dear friend, Ellen XXOOO

To Mark, Ann and your family,
So very sad to hear of your sudden loss. Our thoughts are with you, and the hope that your memories with him are wonderful.
It goes without saying that “Chaz” introduced our 80’s family to new aquatic and winter joys that I still enjoy 35 years later. I’ve often thought of your family over the years while enjoying and teaching my girls all the excitement that can be found on the slopes and chasing the wind and waves. You’ll be thought of often in the weeks ahead. People often have a lore that surrounds them- Chaz was that dad we all wanted to emulate when it came to sharing new adventures, trying new things and taking a chance by pushing the limits just a little- a Legend to be sure.
Love from the Gogan family out West.

Maggie/I are completely heart-broken to learn of Charles passing; our deepest and most profound condolences go out to the entire family including Anne ( a very cherished colleague of mine at work ) and son Mark. Charles was always a great man of principle, humorous yet very very skilled. Of particular note was his incredible support he offered our very small yet dynamic committee his un-wavering support during Regatta 125....Truly a remarkable supporter...Rest in peace Charlie. Ann, Mark & all your family; I am so sorry to read of Charlie’s passing. My condolences go out to you. I met Charlie when my son Brock went into what was called then Nancy Green program. Charlie recognized early the ability my son had and not only moved him up to JD, but he also convinced me that I should take up skiing & become a ski instructor with him & his friends in ski school. Over my 13 years of teaching skiing, Charlie was a great mentor & friend. May many special memories find a way to someday ease your sorrow.

My heart goes out to Mark and Ann and the rest of the family. Charles and I met back in the 90s when he was completing the BITS program at NBCC. I was first introduced to him Charles and that name stuck with me. The first thing that struck me about Charles was how vibrant he was. He Loved Life. And within minutes of working with him you knew he also Loved his son Mark (you could see his chest swell with pride), and skiing, and windsurfing and laughter. His sense of humor was wonderful. I was approaching my 40s, Charles his 50s, and he shattered any preconcieved notions I had about growing "old". Charles was always active, and his eyes lit up at the thoughts of tackling some wild adventure in some remote corner of the world with Mark. He brightened many of my days and was wonderful to be around. I, as well as his many friends and family, will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
