Obituary of Bruce Michael Harrigan
Bruce Michael Harrigan of Saint John NB, formerly of Wickham and Morrisdale, husband of Mary Theresa (Cusack) Harrigan passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept 22,2024 at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born in Saint John on January 5,1930 to the late Michael John and Anna I. (Walsh) Harrigan.
Bruce graduated from St. Sebastian’s in Newton, Mass and attended UNB and St. Dunstan’s in PEI. He started in the insurance business in 1953 and with the assistance of his wife Mary started Harrigan Insurance Ltd. In 1964, until his retirement in 1990. He was well known in the insurance business in the Grand Bay-Westfield area for over 40 years.
Bruce was an active member of his community and served as councillor for the Parish of Westfield on the last Kings County council until 1967. He served for many years on the executive of the Progressive Conservative Party for Fundy Royal and Kings County. He was a member of the Royal Canadian legion branch 76, Hampton Golf and Country club and the Okeechobee KOA club in Florida.
He enjoyed many happy days with his family, hunting and fishing at his camp on Westlong Lake. Bruce and Mary enjoyed over 40 winters in Florida, travelled to Ireland and many other countries including Russia and Japan. He was an avid follower of baseball especially the Atlanta Braves and The Boston Red Sox. Bruce attended the World Series for both teams in 1946 and 1948. He also coached the Grand Bay Merchants for several years in the valley old timer’s league.
In addition to his wife Mary, of 68 years Bruce is survived by his children Danny Harrigan, Bruce Harrigan (Lynn White) Mary Colleen Harrigan, Nancy Boone (Malcolm), Kelly James (Jeff). Grandchildren Sean (Bria), Nicole, Michael (Alisha), Jenna (Ethan), Riley, Chantelle, Taylor, Shannon (Ben). Great grand children Landon and Colter. Sister in laws Norma Cusack and Eileen Cusack and many nieces and nephews. Bruce was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Predeceased by his brothers Paul and Andrew and sisters Phyllis Geraghty, Gladys Lacroix, and his twin sister Marjorie Winchester.
Resting at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3 506-634-1701. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, with a Memorial Service immediately following in Castle Fallsview Chapel. Interment will follow in St. Augustine’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Bruce’s memory can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
