Obituary of Sister Anne Elizabeth Somers

Sister Anne Somers (Sr. M. Ursula), peacefully went Home to her loving God on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Ruth Ross Residence, Saint John, NB.  Born in Newcastle, NB on December 28, 1934, she was the daughter of Wilfred and Blanche (Dunn) Somers.

Upon completing a Commercial course and a Home Economics course in Woodstock, NB and working two years as a stenographer, she entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on September 8, 1955.

After receiving her NB Teacher’s License and Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB, she began her education ministry in Saint John, St. Stephen, NB, Digby, NS, Farrellton, QC, Winnipeg, MN, and Vancouver, Surrey, and Burnaby in BC.

Over the next twenty-eight years, she continued sharing her gifts of hospitality, compassion and kindness as Coordinator of Elementary School Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Vancouver, Director of Anawim House of Prayer in Nelson, BC, Community Assistant Secretary, Director of Volunteer Services at Rocmaura Nursing Home, and Pastoral Associate at St. Marks Parish in Quispamsis, NB.  Sr. Anne also continued her ministry as a volunteer at Ruth Ross Residence and as a Spiritual Director.

Sister Anne had the ability to engage in conversation with anyone she met. Her gentleness and warm smile put people at ease and made them feel welcome and accepted.  As a Spiritual Director, she encouraged and accompanied each person on their journey to find God in their lives.  Her wide circle of friends is a testament to the interest, care and love she showed to others in her life and ministries.

She is predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Blanche (Dunn) Somers; brothers, James, Chester and Evan and sisters, Margaret and Ursula (Pat Medlen).

Survived by brothers, John, Eugene and Wilfred and sister, Sharon (Andrew Podporski).

Visitation on Monday, November 4 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Ruth Ross Residence (105 Burpee Avenue) with Vigil at 6:30pm in Carmel Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 5 at 10am at Carmel Chapel.  For those unable to attend, the Mass will be livestreamed and can be viewed by visiting Sister Anne's obituary on the Brenan's website.  Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
