Obituary of Oscar Estey
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Oscar Estey Jr. on November 10, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Oscar was born on January 21, 1929, in Saint John New Brunswick, son of the late Oscar R. and Hilda Mae (Mitchell) Estey.
Oscar attended Saint John Vocational School and shortly thereafter began work as a carpenter with the City of Saint John Works Department. In these early years he also worked independently for a time with good friend Tony Hachey to build numerous homes in the Saint John area. Seasonal work at the Saint John Winter Port later transitioned to full-time work as a shipliner at Rodney Pier where he was a conscientious and well-respected member of the Brunterm 'gang.' Despite the long hours and unpredictable weather he enjoyed the camaraderie and delighted in meeting crew from all over the world. He loved hearing their stories, learning about their cultures, and even exchanging foods on occasion.
It was during these early years when doing some carpentry work near the old SJGH Nursing Residence that he met the charming Doreen, then a young student nurse. As the story goes, Dad was quite the shy young man and was somewhat at a loss for words so Mom (never at a loss for words) suggested (likely with a bit of sass and a twinkle in her eye) that perhaps someday he could build her a beautiful set of kitchen cabinets. The rest, as they say, is history.
A self-taught scholar and voracious reader, Dad had a remarkable passion for history and its impact on shaping the world we live in. He spent countless hours exploring maps, encyclopedias, and second-hand bookstores (if Mom would let him.) She would often say “you know, your father has a remarkable mind, it’s such a shame he didn’t get to further his education.” Then we would have a great laugh picturing Dad at university, likely involved in lively debates regarding history, religion, politics, or any topic for that matter. We surmise the discussions would have become quite heated but that he would have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
Throughout his lifetime Dad would continue with his love of building. He was a carpenter extraordinaire and could craft almost anything he set his mind to. He and Mom purchased an acre lot on Kennebecasis Island and built ‘the Camp.’ It was rustic and rudimentary to say the least, but all were welcome, and many wonderful memories made. It was a place of rest, relaxation and oh the fun with Dad’s handcrafted boats and the cleverly designed golf course using soup cans for the holes! This humble man made sure our childhood was filled with love, knowledge and adventure. Dad built his final home in Bayswater during his retirement years while in his mid 70s. Even then he did not retire his tools but continued to help family with any projects or renovations they needed.
Upon retirement Oscar was able to indulge his desire to explore and along with Doreen had many wonderful trips abroad. This wanderlust was hereditary so it was inevitable that the family would venture forth as well. He always delighted in hearing the tales of exploration and cherished the many postcards sent from afar.
Oscar was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doreen (Thompson) Estey; his siblings David Estey, Audrey Estey, Rosina Clifford, and Geraldine Barrie; his nephew David Clifford; and dear friend Keith Brown, who passed many years ago.
He leaves behind his loving children: sons Keith (Katherine) Estey and Stuart Estey, daughter Elizabeth (Mark) Carr. As well, his cherished grandchildren; John, Chloe, Hailey, Zach, and Talya; his niece Karen (Daniel) Leblanc and their children Jocelyn Beaudoin and Michael LeBlanc. Also, left to mourn are numerous other nieces and nephews, cousins, his much-loved church family at Full Gospel Assembly and the many wonderful friends and neighbours, both near and far, that he and Mom made and cherished over the years.
Oscar’s life was filled with love for his family, his strong and true faith in God and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. He will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, and the deep connections he made with people throughout his life.
The family would like to extend appreciation for the care provided to Dad by the staff on both 5CN and 4AN at the SJRH especially during the time of Mom’s passing and her funeral.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. A celebration of Oscar’s life will take place at a later date. He would want us to remember him with music, stories and of course, the sharing of food. Details to be provided at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity of choice.
