Obituary of Frank Sydney Hughes
Frank Sydney Hughes died on November 23, 2024, at the age of 91, after a brief illness. Born in Saint John on November 12, 1933, he was a son of James and Elizabeth Hughes. He was predeceased by Lorraine, his beloved wife of 65 years, an infant daughter, and his older siblings, Margaret, James, Irene (Garnett) and Ian.
He is survived by his daughter Christie (Tom Aves), his son Ritchie (Janet Reid), sister-in-law Sharon Hughes, and several nieces and nephews.
A quiet and modest man of integrity, he was an unwavering support to his family. He was ready to offer a helping hand to friends and strangers alike.
Frank met Lorraine Knight at Saint John Vocational School, and they married in 1954. He began his working life as a teletype operator with CN Railway.
Frank served as a member of the Saint John Fire Department for 30 years, with 15 years in active service and 15 years as Administrative Officer, before his retirement in 1988. He was active in union matters in the 1970s, serving as Secretary of IAFF Local 771. In this role, and later as a trusted advisor to the Chief and District Chiefs, he was instrumental behind the scenes in strengthening the department and improving its working conditions. He was a respected mentor to younger firefighters.
With his exceptional memory, he held a wealth of information about the history of the Saint John Fire Department and so much more. His keen intellect, wry sense of humour, and a wide breadth of knowledge guaranteed a continued supply of engaging and lively conversation.
In his youth, Frank played hockey for the Sussex Juniors team, then in local leagues and as a player and coach of Old Timer’s Hockey. Hockey was a passion throughout his life, creating many memories and cementing strong and enduring friendships.
A talented woodworker, Frank created meticulously rendered scale models, clocks and wood carvings. He enjoyed summers with his family and friends at the camp he built on Washademoak Lake. He never met a dog he didn’t like nor a cat he couldn’t get used to. He loved cars, dachshunds, classic country music, American and Irish folk music, Scottish shortbread, good fish and chips and ginger chocolates. Frank will be sadly missed by his remaining family and friends. His children will carefully hand wash and wax their vehicles in his honour.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Mokhtari, Dr. Christian Mackin, Extramural nurse Maggie and the staff of Bobby’s Hospice, in particular, nurse Kelly, for their attentive and compassionate care.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506)-634-7424. In accordance with Frank’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A memorial and interment will be held in the spring. For those who wish to make a donation in Frank’s memory, support for Bobby’s Hospice or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
