I must have been in Chester's first Modern European History class at UNBSJ. And, the next year, I was in his American History class. Of all the professors I had, he certainly stands out in my mind. He and I got along famously and I probably amused him with my views on politics. One time in a seminar class he told me that he could see the barricades in my eyes. After university, I would occasionally run into him and we always had great conversations, usually about historical subjects. The last time he and I spoke was outside the Superstore in Rothesay a few years ago, and we talked about his younger years in the Netherlands. He was as sharp as ever.
I'm very sad to hear about his passing. My condolences to his family.

I was only able to take one class, in U.S. history, from Prof. Young before I transferred to another university. I enjoyed this 8 month course. He held the attention of dozens of students withoutthe A/V aids we now deem so essential. Because of Prof. Young and other UNBSJ instructors I was far from intimidated when I attended larger universities to continue my studies.

My deepest condolences to Margot and family. When I came to UNBSJ, I felt I did not belong at university and questioned whether I could keep up. Chester was my first academic advisor; he steered me away from poor choices and into his American history course and later into his Russian history course. He was patient, kind, funny and fiercely intelligent, and largely due to his influence I stuck with my studies. Through him I met wonderful and lifelong friends; and when he married Margot, I was delighted that he had joined a large extended family to whom I was related. I think of him often, fondly, with respect and gratitude, and always shall. We were blessed to have him in our lives.
