Our sympathy and condolences go out to you and your whole family on the loss of your beloved mother Mary. Mary lived a full and very fruitful life, not the least of which was the fine family she and Kenneth created. So, despite this very sad time we hope you will also celebrate Mary's great life and reflect on all the happy family times you enjoyed together. In time, the sadness will pass but the happiness of those good times will remain forever. While we will not be with you on Feb 10, our thoughts and prayers will be. Love, Sue and Warren

As a new bridge player , I was lucky enough to have Mary ask me to fill in for Mildred when she became ill. She had such patience and I so looked forward to 'Thursdays with Mary' as we called it. I will miss her a lot but not anyway near as much as all of you will. She was so proud of her family. My sincere condolences. Muriel

Patricia Collier (Patsy) posted a condolence
To Dave, Rod, Marilyn and Kenneth, my beloved cousins - I am saddened to hear of Aunt Mary's passing. I know each of you will miss her and the special relationships you had with her. I too will miss just knowing she's here, although we can all imagine she will be having a darn good time on the other side with her beloved sister (my Mum, Hazel Dow Collier Spence), and brothers Larry and Ken Dow. I swear I can almost hear the sounds of the music and laughter they're making together right now ... My Aunt Mary created sunshine for me all my life, right up until her passing. As her niece, her sister Hazel's oldest child, she would often invite me to come and stay with the Cox family, either in Lancaster or at "the lake" where I had the chance to hang out with my [then only] Cox cousins, whom I secretly adored and thought of as my brothers. Memories of these visits remain the highlights of my childhood. I recall several times over the years when Aunt Mary would speak a few simple words of encouragement to me, in her way. She seemed to intuit what I was feeling and unable to express, and this made me feel seen and loved. As a part-time Mum to me, she ruled with a strong, no-nonsense hand. All she had to say in her firm way was "that's enough!" or (my favourite) "that will do!" and whatever unruly behaviour we kids were up to stopped then and there! At two junctures of difficult passages in my life she extended a hand of support to me, which in both instances helped me move forward and through these times with grace and dignity. I am ever grateful for her presence in my life and my memories of her: standing in the lake water up to her knees washing the laundry with a cake of Ivory soap; sounds of her rising in the rustic camp at the lake, putting on the wood stove, the smell of a freshly lit match becoming a throughline to my thoughts of her all my life; Sundays in Saint John hearing her solos at church; the three cookie jars in the kitchen at 216, always magically filled; the sound of her laughter; the Saturday night baths; the stories she would read us; her recent encouragement to me to keep painting; most of all: the way she always made me feel safe. I am so grateful to have had Mary Dow Cox as a guiding and loving hand in my life. I am sending much love to each of you who loved her as one can only love your mother. Regal and invincible, she is and was a very special, wonderful example of the simplicity and the complexity of the human condition. I will always love her. Patsy

My thoughts & love are with you Dave,Rod, Marilyn & Kenny. And to all of Mary's grandchildren and great grandchildren as well. It is clear to me, my aunt was much beloved by family & friends. I would like to say how grateful and appeciative I was of Aunt Mary's kindness during my father's passing. It was a difficult time and she made it easier for all of us. In recent years, I have shared Mary's bridge prowess with the seniors I work with daily. It is a marvellous thing to be engaged in life so fully when we become older. I'm so glad Aunt Mary had such a vibrant life. I am happy to think of the Dow family together again. What a party they must be having!

So sorry to learn about your mother Mary. You have my deepest sympathy. I remember your mother and father clearly when you a;; moved to Roderick Row. I do believe you lived in the garage for a short ime while your home was being built and remember taking you for walks in the stroller Rod after you burnt your feet on the stove. We had some good childhood days playing in the neighbourhood and watching our parents survive the mischief we all managed to get into. Again, my sincerest sympathy and prayers go out to you. Sincerely, Fran Brownell

It is with extreme sadness that I have just heard from my Son Jim Stephenson,of the death of your remarkable Mother. Over the years since I have known Mary, she has helped me and countless others in learning the interesting things of bridge. We will all be missing her, every time a deck is shuffled. Rod, I was just on the Brenan's website in connection with the death of Shirley Creamer and was sad to learn of your Mom's demise. I guess it is a measure of how long we have been away from Saint John that we did not receive word of her passing. Your Mom was a great lady and it was fun to, over the years, look in on the friendship she had with my Mom. At 94 she had a long run and a good life filled with family, fun and activities she loved. Just wanted to pass on condolences to you and your siblings from Liz and me. Paul Meier PS Was sorry not to see you at our 50th high school reunion last summer. There were quite a few in attendance, albeit with many displaying quite different appearances than they had in high school. I have since hooked up with Harry Cousins in Burlington and we are doing a bit of work together. Funny how even with a gap of 30 years, you seem to be able to just pick up where you left off.
