Obituary of Ellen Hazel Whelpley
It is with appreciation for a life well-lived that the family of Ellen Whelpley announces her passing, which occurred peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2017 at the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home surrounded by those she loved. Born in Saint John on April 29, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Frank Best and Mary (Waters) (Best) Long.
Ellen loved to knit, as well as maintain her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens which she was able to enjoy until last year. She was also an avid hunter, and took great pride emparting her expertise on other members of her family.
Ellen will be missed by her daughters: Mary Arthurs, Martha Crabbe, Laura Mills (the late William) and Paula Whelpley; eight granchildren; eight great grandchildren; as well as all those whose lives she touched in her lifetime. In addition to her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her husband, John M. Whelpley who passed away in 2005; and her daughters, Nancy and Susan Whelpley.
Ellen’s Family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home for the excellent care she received during her stay with them.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425). In keeping with Ellen’s wishes, a graveside service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Hardings Point Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Society, or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
