John Messenger Hoyt

Obituary of John Elias Messenger Hoyt

It is with heavy hearts that the family of JOHN ELIAS MESSENGER HOYT, beloved husband of Lynn (MacDonald) Hoyt announce his passing on November 19, 2017 at Bobby’s Hospice, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Saint John he was the son of the late Gerald M. and Ollie (Golding) Hoyt. John held various jobs and positions throughout his life, including his years at the dry dock, but the one he took the most pride in was owning and running the special care home with his wife Lynn. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. And could he tell stories!! He loved to write, when he still could, especially the letters to Ann. He also enjoyed the dinner parties he and Lynn hosted and the hockey parties with his buddies. He was a generous, caring man and was humbled to be recognized at a special ceremony in 2009 for organ donation, for his ‘gift of life’ when he donated the skin and bone from the leg he lost in 2008. He was the only living donor at the ceremony. Besides his wife, John is survived by his daughter Mary-Jane (John) McKay, Saint John; step-sons Scott (Cheryl) Northrup, Prince George BC, Craig Northrup, Saint John and step-daughter Barbara McNally, Hampton; grandchildren Caitlyn Hamdi and Sawyer McKay; step-grandchildren Haley and Jon McNally; great-grandchildren Ray-Shawn Monteiro and Lilly and Ava Chisholm; sisters Betty McGuire, Kennebecasis Park and Ann (Hugh) Coulter, Yarrow, BC. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, including his special niece Carla who was like another daughter to him, family and friends and his beloved pets; his dogs Taylor (the favorite) and Spencer and his precious cat Punk. In addition to his parents John is predeceased by his sister Ollie Mallory, brother-in-law William McGuire and Nancy Hoyt (Mary-Jane’s mother). Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, N.B. (634-7425). In keeping with his request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of his life will take place at his home on Sunday, November 26 from 2-4pm.In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to the SPCA or Bobby’s Hospice.
