Obituary of J. Leo Hayes

While we celebrate a life well lived, we grieve for the passing of Jeremiah Leo Hayes, loving husband to the late Doris (Aube) Hayes, which occurred on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on November 7, 1931 in Peterborough, Ontario, Leo was a son to the late William and Angeline (O’Grady) Hayes. Leo was a Diesel Mechanic with the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, then with the City of Saint John for 20. He spent many years and hours with his dart team and bowling league on Wednesdays at the Bowlarama. Leo enjoyed square dancing, camping anywhere the trailer took him and at the cabin, and recently taking in Seadogs games. He also, very recently, became an owner of a side by side and took great pleasure driving it. Leo was known for his sense of humour and unwavering acceptance of others. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Leo will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Cheryle Hayes and Sandra (Willard) Vandenberghe, grandchildren: Dawn Young, Stefan Hayes, Christopher (Jeanette) Hayes and Ashley Hayes, great grandchildren: Lexus Ruiz and Aurora Young, his brother William (Wilma) Hayes along with many nieces, nephews and members of his extended family. Besides his parents and wife of 46 years Doris, Leo was predeceased by his son Daniel Hayes, grandson Skyler Vandenberghe, brothers: John and Joseph, sisters: Agnes, Lillian and Theresa. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (634-7425) where family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, January 7 from 2-8 PM with a Legion Service beginning at 7PM. The Funeral Liturgy will take place on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 1:00 PM from Bay View Chapel. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of donor’s choice.
