Obituary of Helen Gertrude Beckett

With appreciation for a life well-lived, the family of Helen G. Beckett, loving wife of the late Waldo Beckett, announces her passing which occurred on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at her home in Oak Point, NB at the age of 90. Born in Oak Point on June 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Sadie (Akerley) Kirk and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her greatest joy in life was found in being at home and working hard as a wife to her husband, a mother to her children, and eventually a grandmother to her grandchildren. Home was the place she wanted to be, and Oak Point was her home for all of her 90 years. Normal days for her would begin at 5:00 am and be filled with what she considered to be her work – preparing meals for her family, house cleaning, doing laundry, tending the garden (especially her tomatoes), mending clothes, quilting, baking, cooking, pickling and canning, helping to get the wood in and keeping the fires burning. She enjoyed working and she worked hard. Her greatest frustration in later years was a feeling of uselessness as her physical health declined preventing her from "doing the things she used to do". Helen was a member of the Browns Flat Baptist Church and Dominion Life Member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Helen will be missed by her seven children: Linda Beckett, Malcolm Beckett, David Beckett, Henry Beckett, Roy Beckett, Joyce McKay, and Eldon Beckett; thirteen grandchildren, Benjamin Beckett, Sarah Cook, Caleb Beckett, Ethan Beckett, Nicole Beckett, Michael Beckett, Brittney Beckett, Samuel Beckett, Joshua Beckett, Elizabeth Beckett, John McKay, Justin McKay and Curtis McKay; six great-grandchildren, Thomas and Aaron Beckett, Dylan and Lucas Cook, West Rafuse and Gavin Beckett, and Charleigh Mallery; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband Waldo who passed away in 2004, Helen was predeceased by her two brothers, Ron and Bill Kirk. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425) with visitation on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 2-8 pm. A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm from Browns Flat Baptist Church. Interment will take place at a later date at the Oak PointBaptist Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Oak Point Baptist Cemetery or a charity of the donor’s choice.
