Obituary of Ellen Doherty

DOHERTY, ELLEN The family of Ellen Doherty of Saint John announces her passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday August 19th, 2018 after a period of failing health. Ellen was born in Lower Southampton, NB on March 26, 1921; she was the daughter of Alexander and Mary Ann Ferguson. She is survived by her only child, Sharon E. Francis (Brian E.) of Saint John; grandchildren, Michelle Francis-Doyle (Mark), Quispamsis and Amy Conn (Andrew), Fredericton; and great-grandchildren, Allison and Benjamin Doyle and Emma-Grace and Grayson Conn. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Barrett, as well as several nieces and nephews. Her husband of 57 years, Charles F. Doherty died in 2002. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been pre-deceased by her sisters, Rebecca Graham, Mary Haines, Tena Green, Mazie McLaughlin and brothers James, Alex, John, Duncan and George Ferguson. Ellen and Charlie spent their early family years in Lower Southampton, with a relocation to Fredericton in 1965. Ellen enjoyed working at UNB where she was employed for several years in the Housekeeping department for the student residences. On retirement, she and Charlie moved to Saint John to be closer to their family. During the time of Charlie’s illness, Ellen met her dear friend and caregiver, Audrey Richard. "Audrey doesn’t mind" became a frequent refrain. We are so thankful for her love and kindness to Mom. Ellen was an adherent of St. Mark’s United Church, Saint John West. Thank you to the ladies from the church, who visited Mom, brought treats and enjoyed listening to stories about the old days. Thank you also to Rev. John Roy who visited and shared communion with Mom. Since March 1, 2017 Ellen resided at Howe Hall, Parkland, Millidgeville where she enjoyed participating in the various social activities. It was here that Mom reconnected with Rev. John Fraser who had ministered at St. Mark’s United Church when Charlie became ill. Rev. Fraser met with Mom weekly when he did a service at Parkland and visited often when she was in hospital. Thanks also to Rev. Cannon David Barrett, Mom’s nephew, who visited Mom several times during her hospital stay. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Ellen during her stay at the Saint John Regional Hospital, as well as the caring staff at Parkland, Millidgeville. A special thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Keyes for many years as her family physician. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home ,1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425) with visiting on Wednesday August 22nd, 2018 , 2- 5 p.m. At Ellen’s request there will be no formal funeral service.
