Obituary of Susan Margaret Hamilton

It is with heavy hearts the family of Susan Margaret (Douglas) Hamilton announce her passing, which occurred on November 9, 2018 at Carleton Kirk Lodge Nursing Home at the age of 101. Born on June 9, 1917 in New Jerusalem, Mom was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Bates) Douglas. Mom is survived by her sister, Grace (the late Ron) Lutes of Ontario; son, Gary (Maggie) Hamilton of Lower Greenwich; daughters, Carma (the late Ken) Paterson of Peterborough, Ontario, Wanda (Allen) Porter of Lower Greenwich and Lorna (the late Arthur) Wright of Lower Greenwich; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Dean R. Hamilton; son, Phillip; daughter-in-law, Yvonne; sons-in-law, Arthur Wright and Kenneth Paterson; sisters, Annie Hossack, Freda Joyce and Reta Pender; brothers-in-law, Walter Pender, Carmen Hossack, Ronald Lutes and Anthony Joyce. Mom was loved by all who knew her and made friends wherever she went. She was known for her wit, kindness, generosity and her ready smile. Her love for the people from "out home" New Jerusalem was well known and be it a get together, wedding, funeral, anniversary or the annual picnic at Sleeps Hill she would be there. In her life she owned a restaurant (Bay Gill located in Grand Bay) and was known for her donuts and pies. She also was a switch board operator and was Post Mistress in Grand Bay where the children called her Mrs. Post Office Lady and where she retired from in 1982. Mom was a member of the Greenwich Gems and a lifelong member of the Base Gagetown Community History Association. On a Thursday night in Grand Bay you would find her in the Orange Lodge hall playing bingo. She loved seeing new things and her love of travel took her to many places across the USA, Canada, Scotland, England and Germany. She is on her final journey home. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff for their excellent care of Mom while she was a resident of Carleton Kirk Lodge Nursing Home. A special thanks to Mike and Karen "Recreation" for all the wonderful and creative activities they arranged. She loved you all. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, West Saint John (634-7425) with visiting on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Bay View Chapel on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:00 AM. A private family interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Carleton Kirk Lodge Nursing Home or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
